Dr. Dean was a successful general dentist in Texas who volunteered to go as a foreign missionary to Burkina Faso in West Africa in the 80's and early 90's. He went as a dentist but needed to wear many different hats during his time in Africa. The book is as much about strangers living in a strange land than just being a missionary.
