Told in the voice of a (former) guard dog, the novel concerns an abandoned Siberian camp, once a part of the gulag system. It has been closed, and its prisoners freed, but the faithful dogs have been left behind to fend for themselves. They spend each day at the forlorn train depot, waiting for the return of the "Masters."
