Since its foundation in 1993 the NTEU has negotiated to bring about substantial changes in the higher education sector. In an era characterised by declining public investment and growing precarious employment, John OBrien argues that unions not only have a capability to serve their constituents, but to have a beneficial impact on society as a whole.
