We originally found this criss-crossing pattern on a small piece of silk that was collected in a fabric swatchbook during the 1800s. Though this particular design comes from a collection of French materials, plaid itself is a woven style dating back to China in 1500 BC. Original Art: Silk fabric swatch. Era: 1800s.
