Description

'In modern life we feel liberated by giving expression to our genuine sadness, and not even attempting the stoicism of earlier generations. Here are twenty-seven different and extraordinarily moving expressions of love, from one human being to another. That is their power. And their glory.'

Gathered together in this collection are some of the very best examples of that intriguing oral tradition, the eulogy. A miniature vignette of a person's life and their impact on the world, a eulogy is poignant, moving and personal - an extended love letter read in public, whether from husband or wife, lover, child or friend.

Richard Walsh has drawn together some of the most inspiring and touching eulogies ever given in Australia - tributes to both the famous and the obscure; to the old, of course, and the very young; and to one who is actually still very much alive. The eulogists in this collection include Richie Benaud speaking in the Adelaide Cathedral at the funeral of Sir Donald Bradman, Jacki Weaver at the funeral of her former lover Richard Wherrett, and Andrew Denton on Don Chipp.

There is knockabout humour in abundance, and rough-as-guts emotion; plain speaking and great wit; deep sadness, but also great joy.

A truly inspirational book, Great Australian Eulogies exemplifies for us all how marking a person's death can become a passionate and heartfelt celebration of life.
