Description

Leach was born in Hong Kong, and spent the first few years of his life in Japan. Later, he attended Slade School of Fine Art and the London School of Art, where he studied etching under Frank Brangwyn. 'A Potter in Japan' is a collection of memoirs and diary entries from his return to Japan in the early 1950's. These accounts provide a unique opportunity to see the Eastern influence on his craft. This book appeals to lovers of ceramics and those with an interest in cultural interchange between East and West. Out of print since 1960's and published alongside his practical guide, The Potter's Handbook.

Reviews

"Provide[s] insight into the influence of Asian art, philosophies, and cultures on his work and studio practice."-- "Ceramic Arts"
"This is an enjoyable book, shuttling easily between the keen-eyed and the gently ruminative, filled with passion not so much for the objects in themselves as for the milieu in which they are made, continuously seeking after new and ever deeper cultural dialogues, amiably open to social entanglements."-- "Times Literary Supplement"
