The writer looks back from 80 years with a certain cynical humour over what he regards as a fairly typical life for one of his generation. There are glimpses of boyhood in a small rural town, and of times spent at Christ's College and Lincoln Agriculture College, all overshadowed by the presence of World War II. This is brought to life with personal descriptions and criticisms, especially of British equipment, from the perspective of a Private soldier in a front line infantry platoon. The book concludes with Tony's somewhat deprecating comments on religions in general and dire, but logical, predictions for the future.
