During the busiest period in the Armys history, Rod was deployed to East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In Australia, he was involved in counter terrorism operations and disaster recovery. From an infantry paratrooper, to Chinook loadmaster and Blackhawk door gunner, Rod reveals an enthralling and unique perspective of service.

Whether it is right place wrong time or just unlucky, he found himself in a series of life threatening and traumatic events. Each one took a toll. Accepting the physical injuries and mental health challenges from his service, Rod found healing in the hallowed halls of the Australian War Memorial.

Author Bio

In 1995, as a young, nave teenager,Rod Hendersonjoined the Australian Army. He spent the next 22 years serving Australia during the busiest period in the Armys history. First as a paratrooper in the infantry, then as a door gunner on board Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters, Rod was deployed to many places in the world during his career. Whether it was luck or good training, he survived many near misses along the way. Rod now lives near Canberra with his wife, three young boys, two German shepherds and a flock of sheep. After a medical separation from the Army in 2017, Rod continues to serve his country working as a voluntary guide with the Australian War Memorial. He is passionate about veterans telling their experiences and has seen firsthand the benefit that storytelling brings.
