John Brown: A Reference Guideto His Life and Works is the first book with a full biographical scope on Browns life, not just his controversial Harpers Ferry raid of 1859. This book is an overview of Browns life and the social and political aspects of his legacy in U.S. history. It contains a chronology, an introduction, a dictionary of persons and places essential to the study of Browns life and times, as well as a substantive bibliography, letter calendar (1859), and appendices offering a variety of sources and insights into this study. Based on nearly thirty years of biographical research, this work will be useful to new students as well as those already working in the field of John Brown and antebellum studies.
Louis A. DeCaro, Jr. holds graduate degrees in theology and history and a Ph.D. from New York University. With a background in urban pastoral and theological education, he served as Professor of History for seventeen years at the former Alliance Theological Seminary in New York City. A seasoned biographer, he is completing his third decade as a student of Browns life and letters and is the host of his own podcast, John Brown Today.
