This book describes the authors time in the Navy aboard the USS Picking from January 1951 to August 1954.Details of the USS Picking and the crew that sailed on it during his time aboard. Roles and Responsibilities aboard the ship are described with an emphasis on the Electronics Technician group that he was a part of. Each of the cruises that the ship went on are also detailed along with the ship's activities during the Korean War. This book also includes background information leading up to enlisting in the Navy as well as background information on how this book came about.
Nicholas Kovachick was born in Sagamore, Pennsylvania in October 1930 and attended Indiana High School, (Class of '48), before starting college at Penn State University later that Fall. After completing his Freshman and half of his Sophomore years, he enrolled in the Navy and served his country until being granted an early discharge in August 1954 so that he could complete his college studies. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a BSEE in June 1956 and immediately got back into Military and Federal Electronics work with a job as an Engineer with a major Industrial company, working for them for 34 years. About half of those work years was as a Senior Systems Engineer and an additional 5 years as a Functional Manager. Upon retirement, he continued to work as an independent consultant for another 16 years before finally retiring for the second, (and final), time.
