Baron de Marbot was a dashing aide-de-camp to three of Napoleon's generals before becoming Colonel of Hussars and being promoted to General on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo. His memoirs, the inspiration for Conan Doyle's Brigadier Gerard stories, focus on incidents and people rather than of theories of war or complex battle tactics. This volume is abridged from the original 1897 English edition and retranslated in places to correct inaccuracies. The editor provides links between the episodes, so that the narrative is continued, the scene set and the reader provided with the necessary background.
