Using stories, poetry, letters and interviews, Merenia retells the storiesof how her ancestors survived Te Rauparahas raids, signed the Treaty of Waitangi, and came from Norfolk andAberdeen to settle in Nelson.Tiahuia was a teacher, an artist, a Wellington City Councillor, a graduate of Victoria University, a nurse, a lifelongmember of Ngti Pneke, and a skilled practitioner of a range of Mori performing arts, particularly karanga.She was a unique woman whose life drew together te ao Mori and te ao Pkeh.
Merenia Gray (Ngi Tahu, Rangitne, Tainui, Pkeh) is an artsentrepreneur currently working as an adviser for Manat Taonga,Ministry for Culture and Heritage in Sector Performance of CrownEntities. Nationally and internationally, her artistic career as an awardwinningchoreographer, dancer, teacher and arts sector leaderspanned thirty five years. Merenias whnau has a long and illustriouslegacy of excellence within Aotearoa and the legal and arts sectors.
