The first book-length study of Australian Jewish autobiography, This Crazy Thing A Life makes a substantial contribution to multicultural and migrant writing. From humble, self-published memoirs by amateur chroniclers to celebrated releases by high-profile authors such as Judah Waten, Andrew Reimer, Jacob Rosenberg and Doris and Lily Brett, Richard Freadman's richly reflective work interweaves past and present, events and attitudes, literary theory and narrative forms to address important and often profoundly moving topics such as Holocaust memory, migrant autobiography, diaspora studies and multiculturalism from a variety of viewpoints.
Richard Freadman was born and educated in Melbourne and holds a DPhil in English and American literature from the University of Oxford. He has taught at The University of Western Australia and is Professor of English at La Trobe University, and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of English at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. He was founding Director of the Unit for Studies in Biography and Autobiography at La Trobe, and is founding Director of the Life Writing Research Institute at Lingnan. Richard Freadman has written scholarly books, articles and memoir in the area of autobiography studies. A Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, he is married with three children.
