Bill Lawry will always be one of the most iconic figures of Australian cricket. Whether you remember him best as the famously relentless batsman, stonewalling captain, or excitable, beloved commentator Lawry has been at the heart of the game for almost sixty years.
Bill Lawry: Chasing a Centurytells the story of his stellar cricketing career from his youth in district cricket and his debut in the Australian team in 1961, a year in which he exceeded a staggering 2000 runs in his first tour of England; through the sixty-seven Australian Tests he played as opening batsman and his leadership in the captaincy of the Australian team; to his incontestable reign as one of the original voices of cricket.
Here, tales from colleagues, players, cricket writers and those who listened to his broadcasts every summer, bring Lawrys career to life and remind us of the colossal contribution this left-handed legend has made to Australian cricket.
Recognised as one of Australias finest players, Bill Lawry started his career in district cricket at Northcote Cricket Club in 1948. Just seven years later he was selected to play for Victoria only a few months before his nineteenth birthday.
In 1961, Lawry made his Australian Test debut, becoming a crucial member of the team for the next ten years and going on to captain his country for twenty-five of the sixty-seven Tests he played. Lawrys unremitting defence on the pitch quickly established him as one of the worlds leading batsmen, his infamously long stints at the crease infuriating his opponents and sometimes even his fans.
In 1977, Lawrys love of the game found a new medium, and Bill became one of crickets most well-known and loved commentators for over forty years. Up until his retirement, announced in May 2018, his catchphrases and infectious enthusiasm were an irreplaceable part of every Australian summer.
