First published in 1993, Ruka Alan Broughtons book on Ngti Ruanui leader Tiitokowaru is one of a small number of histories or biographies written in te reo Mori. Ngaa mahi a Tiitokowaru draws upon a wide range of Mori oral literature and is complemented by commentary and oral testimony provided to Ruka Alan Broughton in his youth by contemporaries of Tiitokowaru, a man whose place in the history of Aotearoa is legendary. This comprehensive work covers many facets of the life of Tiitokowaru, from his genealogy to his roles as a warrior, chief, tohunga and passive protestor. This new edition of Ngaa mahi a Tiitokowawu is one of four new editions of essential reo Mori texts released in 2024 by Te Herenga Waka University Press, in collaboration with Te Takarangi, a national programme celebrating mtauranga Mori through Mori-authored works of non-fiction.
Rangihuta Alan Herewini Ruka Broughton (Ng Rauru, Ngti Ruanui) was a tohunga, Anglican priest, and university lecturer. He was born in Whanganui in 1940 and known as Ruka Broughton. In 1978 he began work as a lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, and together with Hirini Mead and Wiremu Parker he was influential in establishing a marae on the campus in 1985. He was an officiating tohunga at the opening of the exhibition Te Mori in New York. He completed an MA in 1979 with a thesis on Ng Rauru presented entirely in the Taranaki dialect of te reo Mori. His thesis on Ttokowaru was published posthumously in 1993 as Ngaa Mahi Whakaari a Tiitokowaru.
