Quentin Crisp was born in Sutton, Surrey, in 1908. After fifty years of almost unalleviated obscurity he found fame when a groundbreaking TV dramatisation of his autobiography, The Naked Civil Servant, was shown to great acclaim in the 1970s. Since then he has written several books, among them a second volume of autobiography, How to Become a Virgin, and more recently a book of film criticism, How to go to the Movies. Once described as one of the great stately homos of England, Quentin Crisp now lives in New York.
