Description

When Australian Test batsman Justin Langer joined Middlesex as their overseas player for the 1998 season, he was not at all sure what to expect. He certainly didn t think the season would start in snow - the first time he had ever experienced it. In this book he reveals what life is like on the county circuit, and contrasts this with cricket back home, searching for the reasons why the English game is struggling. But the book is about much more than cricket, it is an outsider s view on English life, as Langer casts a wry look at the things the English and Londoners put up with, as well as those things where we just don t realise how lucky we are.

Reviews

Thoughtful, open-minded and very readable - Wisden Cricket Monthly

Eminently readable - Independent on Sunday

It is witty, innovative and daring in style ... a joy and a revelation ... He is intelligent and constructive, funny and mischievous, a man of real character ... Move over, Mr Pinter - Wisden Cricketers' Almanack

It takes an outsider to analyse without prejudice the flaws in what was once thought of as our national game. Fortunately that job has just been completed [in] FROM OUTBACK TO OUTFIELD - Dominic Lawson, Sunday Telegraph

Engagingly written ... [Langer is] a realistic critic of the professional system and yet an unabashed admirer of it and the traditions on which it is built. - Christopher Martin-Jenkins, The Times
