We live in a world of competition which is supposed to improve our lives; everybody is told they need to be a winner. The winter issue of Granta - Winners - looks at the theme through sport, politics and art.
With new fiction by Caryl Churchill, Mircea Cartarescu, K Patrick, Edward Salem, Kathryn Scanlan and Ben Nugent, as well as Nico Walker on the history of American football, Clare Bucknell on antique tennis and Declan Ryan on heavyweight boxing (among others), it seems the art of winning is hard to master.
Thomas Meaney is the editor of Granta. He has reported for the New Yorker and Harper's magazine, and contributes regularly to the London Review of Books. In 2022, he received the Robert B. Silvers Prize for Journalism.
