"Municipal Larceny vs Steve the Barber" begins with a 170-year history of Oroville, California. This fascinating historical highlight reel covers four economic booms: the gold rush, railroad construction, building of the Oroville Dam, and the repair of a failed spillway which had triggered the evacuation of 180,000 people.
Woven throughout this historical record are entertaining tales of Steve Christensen's upbringing in Oroville, from pre-school in the 40's to the Covid shutdown 75 years later.
Spiced with sardonic barbershop humor, we see why it is wise to keep a close eye on the shenanigans of City Hall and how one barber battled his city to defeat proposed tax increases.
Steve, a first-time author, fulfilled a long-time dream of putting his experiences as a small-town barber and local government watchdog into print. Raised in the small town of Oroville, CA, his favorite experience in school was writing articles for the high school newspaper. After graduation, his parents decided he would follow Dad's career and sent him off to Barber College. He served in the National Guard in the 60s and has owned his own barbershop for over 55 years. In 2020 the state of California mandated the closing of barber shops which opened the opportunity for him to write his memoirs. He used his unique writing style to accomplish his goal of making his story both entertaining and informative.
