From Gen X IT Girl Ione Skye comes a wild ride of Hollywood thrills, confessions, and desire. Heartfelt and entertaining, Say Everything pulls back the covers on a messy, sexy, defiantly unconventional life.
Best known as John Cusack's dream girl in the classic 1989 film Say Anything, Ione Skye has been breaking hearts and surviving heartbreaking- both on and off screen ever since.
Deserted by her dad, the folk-singing legend Donovan, she raced through girlhood at warp speed, chasing warmth and validation through acting and affairs with some of the brightest lights in entertainment.
On the heels of a toxic teen relationship with the decade-older Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skye leapt into emotional security and wedded bliss with Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz. But marriage at twenty-one was not the magical hall pass to adulthood she'd imagined. Her Hollywood fairy tale imploded, taking her trust in love- and herself- along with it.
With bold vulnerability, Skye reflects on the art, sex, films, and friendships that helped her grow beyond the pain of her past and into an electrifying womanhood. No longer looking to others for self-worth, she finds reconciliation with her father, satisfaction in meaningful roles, and, at last, a second change at true love.
Set against the backdrop of a gritty, dreamy, late-twentieth-century Los Angeles, Say Everything, is a deeply introspective, lushly cinematic memoir that leaves nothing unsaid.
Like Ione Skye herself, Say Everything leads with her wonderful heart. There is a timeless authenticity about what shes written. Deeply personal, riveting, and funny, Ione has created an emotional diary that feels like a song you never want to end. As an actor and as a writer, her honesty is unforgettable. CAMERON CROWE
Ione Skyes unflinching memoir embodies the grit of Eve Babitz mixed with the enchanting guilelessness of Alice navigating her way through the most illogical wonderlands of them all: Hollywood. Ione tells her story of grappling with primal abandonment, love and heartbreak with compassionate candor and a true visual artists recall of detail. As the title states, she really does say everything and left me wanting even more. MOLLY RINGWALD
Ione grew up in Hollywoods fast lane, where she crashed and burned more than once in pursuit of love, but lived to write a coming-of-age tale with heartbreaking honesty and devilish humor. Say Everything also perfectly captures the excitement of making movies and music in the nineties, which was a delight to revisit. GRIFFIN DUNNE
Always charming and witty, Ione was in the center of my nineties LA. SOFIA COPPOLA
Ione Skye has always been a bit of a mystery; beautiful, elegant, and artistically accomplished in various realms of the arts. It was a pleasure to read her engaging book. CRISPIN GLOVER
Ione Skye captivated an entire generation as a new kind of ingenueidiosyncratic, almost vulpine, and a fascinating fixture of LA lure. But this book proves that even though she was on everyones screen (and wall) she had more to say than anyone elses work could contain. And that the most fascinating, funny and ferocious version of events was her own. LENA DUNHAM
Ione Skye made her film debut opposite Keanu Reeves in Rivers Edge, followed by her iconic role as Diane Court in Say Anything. She has appeared in other notable films and television projects including Zodiac, Waynes World, Fever Pitch, Arrested Development, Camping, Good Girls, Beef, and many more.
