Prison is harsh enough, but as a foreigner (farang) in a strange land, jail time is an even more horrifying reality. Rotting in the Bangkok Hilton is a collection of short stories chronicling T. M. Hoys descent into the harrowing world of Southeast Asian prison life. Through his eyes, readers will experience the bizarre events of daily life in a Thai maximum security prison: feel the weight of the chains he wears, the stomachaches from lack of food, witness the murders, drug overdoses, torture, and unbridled cruelty that ensues.
Sentenced to life in prison, Hoy does his best to accept the fate hes been given. While attempting to adjust to this third-world hellhole, he contracts tuberculosis and nearly loses his life.
Hoys stories are brutal and his words are heart-wrenching. Go places youve only seen in your nightmares, to a world in which few survive, and none emerge unscathed . . . and if youre lucky, youll die before you really begin to suffer.
T. M. Hoy's stories provide a coherent and gripping account of his five harrowing years in a Thai maximum security prison. Always aware of the reality he faces daily and of its context outside the prison Hoy comes through a most degrading experience whole and unbrutalized. He gives us an extremely readable, if tough to take at times, look at depths one hopes to never have to cope with. --John Zerzan, author of Running on Emptiness
it is without a doubt an eye-opening account of what actually goes on there, and an incredibly absorbing read. --Seattle Post-Intelligencer

A thoughtful series of meditations on living as well as possible under the worst possible conditions. --Kirkus Reviews
T. M. Hoy was born and raised in Mountain View, California. He spent his younger years learning Latin and Greek from his grandfather, a biblical scholar. After extensive travel in Asia, he settled in Bangkok, and then Chiang Mai, located in Northern Thailand. While living there, he made a "tragic error in judgment" by not reporting a friend to the police for murder. In 1995, he was given a life sentence, and spent the next five-plus years between Chiang Mai Remand and Bang Kwang Prison. He was luckily given a treaty transfer and sent back to the states, where he finished his sentence at FCC Tucson in 2011. Hoy currently resides in Tucson, Arizona.
