Reviews

After a good introductory essay dealing with the characteristics of Ibsen's plays, there follows a detailed chronology of Ibsen's life. The main body of the book includes character identification, information about the important people in Ibsen's life and career, and accounts of the most famous theater people, actors, and actresses associated with specific roles in the plays. In addition, a detailed stage history, a plot synopsis, and a structural analysis are presented for each play. The entries are remarkably well done and as complete as necesssary for an intensive introduction to Ibsen. The appendix includes a list of the early translators of the plays. A selected bibliography is included but additional reference notes are added to entries throughout the book. This excellent work is highly recommended as a reference tool for undergraduates, graduate students, and Ibsen scholars in general.-Choice
