An intellectual escapes the security and wealth of his Budapest life and heads for the dream land of Portugal. He stops in a remote poverty-stricken village where he refuses to become part of the community. He seduces the inn-keeper's daughter with his alluring sadness, but is pursued by his wealthy wife. This version is from a literal translation by Katalin Trencsnyi and is part of the National Theatre's Channels (Hungary) season of rehearsed readings, initiated by the NT Studio and performed in the Cottesloe Theatre.
Zoltan Egressy began his career as a poet and a drummer in a rock band, but for the last seven years has been writing for the stage. His plays are put on regularly by theatres in Hungary, as well as being translated into other languages, including German and Slovak. The English version of Spinach and Chips was a hit in 2003 in England.
