Description

A country doctor recounts a story to an aspiring Russian novelist Like its subject, the tale is unexpected, short and painfully sweet. A love affair occurs between the doctor and his dying patient, the beautiful Alexandra. Thrown together by her sickness, they find a love imbued with an honesty and truthfulness that most would find unbearable. But in this situation it will last a lifetime. 'The Country Doctor' was first published in the Russian literary magazine The Contemporary in the late 1840s. Simon Day's adaptation reworks this enchanting story of fragile life and frustrated love for a dramatic context, bringing the elegance of Turgenev's prose to life in a new way. Simon Day's play Spike was produced at the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, starring Richard Briers. He has written two other full-length plays. He wrote this adaptation of The Country Life while playing the revolutionary poet Nicholas Ogarev in The Coast of Utopia (RNT, 2000)
