John Davidson retells myths and historical events (sometimes to highlight a modern concern or controversy), reinvents mythical or historical individuals, and now and then enjoys shameless forays into fantasy.
John Davidsons sixth collection is anchored in the past, the present and wthe landscape. ... Impressionistic, imagistic and philosophical immersions flourish wherever Davidson transports us. Tightly framed, sharply musical, the poems often feel akin to paintings, particularly in their ability to have greatest impact after careful study and reflection. Beautiful. Siobhan Harvey, NZ Herald; His poems are vibrant, smart and impeccable ... Davidson knows how to pen words that are juicy, insistent and meaningful. Hamesh Wyatt, Otago Daily Times
John Davidson lives in Wellington, having retired as Professor of Classics at Victoria University of Wellington in 2010. He has published extensively on ancient Greek literature and mythology, and was co-author of The Snake-Haired Muse: James K. Baxter and Classical Myth (2011). This is Johns seventh collection of poetry, after Presence in Absence (2013), Snapshots of Berlin (with Matthias Seidenstcker, 2014), Soundings of Hellas (2015), Visions of Valhalla (2016), Perspectives of Pilgrimage (2017) and Petone Beach & other poems (2018).
