Fredy Neptune is a verse novel, a classic of Australian writing that has been praised around the world. This stylish new edition contains a new afterword by Les Murray, 'How Fredy and I wrote Fredy Neptune'.Fredy Neptune involves the journeys of a man born on the north coast of New South Wales, a gentle, curious man of enormous physical strength who loses his ability to feel. His travels take him around the world, through Hitler's Germany, and cause him to witness some of the horrors of the twentieth century. The persistence of Fredy's decency is, among other things, a celebration of much that Les Murray associates with Australia. This is one of the key works by Australia's greatest poet.
Les Murray is Australia's leading poet. He lives in Bunyah, near Taree in New South Wales. He has published some thirty books. His work is studied in schools and universities around Australia and has been translated into about half a dozen foreign languages. In 1996 he was awarded the T.S. Eliot Prize for poetry, in 1998 the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry, and in 2004 the Mondello Prize. His most recent collection, The Biplane Houses, was published by Black Inc. in April 2006.
