Written in 1944-5, these poems record the immediate impact of James K. Baxter's first serious love affair. The sequence is published for the first time on the 40th anniversary of the poet's death, 22 October 2013.
James K. Baxter, one of New Zealand's finest poets and most controversial figures, was a dramatist, literary critic, and social commentator intimately involved in the social process. Known for his barefoot and bearded appearance, he was often at odds with a society unable to face its disturbing reflection in his work. He died in 1972. John Weir is a Catholic priest and was a close friend of James Baxter.
