This book presents a text, edited with introduction, commentary and glossary, of the Middle Welsh poems concerned with the world of nature, human life, manners and morals and proverbial wisdom, collectively known as gnomic poetry. The study begins with a general introduction, which discusses the concept and nature of gnomic poetry, makes comparisons with similar material in related literatures, and offers suggestions concerning the origins and function of the poetry. There follows a newly edited text of the poems and concludes with a glossary designed to provide coverage of the texts as comprehensively as possible. The texts are printed in the original Welsh and edited in English.
Dr Jacobs is a retired Lecturer in English Language and Medieval Literature, Oxford University.
