Now, to pry into roots, to finger slime, To stare big-eyed Narcissus, into some spring, Is beneath all adult dignity. I rhyme, To see myself, to set the darkness echoing.
Death of a Naturalist marks the auspicious outset of an acclaimed master. As a first book of poems, it is remarkable for its accurate perceptions and its rich linguistic gifts.
Seamus Heany was born in 1939 in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first book, appeared in 1966. Since then he has published poetry, criticism and translations for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for The Spirit Level (1996) and Beowulf (1999). Electric Light appeared in 2001 and Finders Keepers in 2002. His latest collection, District and Circle is also published this month.
