John Esam was born in 1934 in Wellington. His youthful escapades left a few legends among the poetry/arts community in the late 1950s and early '60s in Wellington, then he quit New Zealand for the UK and Europe. In 1965 he organised and read at an epochal poetry event at Albert Hall, London - attended by 7000 people - featuring Allen Ginsberg and a constellation of similar talent. John was also controversially involved with musicians such as Pink Floyd and counterculture icons such as Timothy Leary. He has lived overseas and kept a low profile ever since, but has never stopped writing excellent poetry. This is his life's work.
