John Davidson was born in Lower Hutt and lives in Wellington, having retired as Professor of Classics at Victoria University of Wellington in 2010. His most recent book, co-authored with Geoffrey Miles and Paul Millar, is The Snake-Haired Muse: James K. Baxter and Classical Myth (VUP 2011). He published a number of poems and short stories in literary journals in the 1970s and early 1980s and took up creative writing seriously again in 2008. This is his first collection of poetry, and his experiences in New Zealand and overseas covering more than 45 years are reflected in it. Many of the poems relate in some way to members of his family now deceased, and so the book is dedicated to their memory.
