The poems in Salt Train are notes from the soul's hunt for itself. They explore, among other things, the correspondence between the outer and inner world, the sameness between the laws and antics of nature and the composition and workings of the self. These trance encounters with meaning meander from the New York City subway to a North Beach bar, to the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri, to the streets of Belfast, Frankfurt and Hong Kong.
John Martin was born in the South Bronx. After graduating from college with a degree in English Literature he spent seven years as a machinist in the South Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, South Boston, and Oakland CA. He left the factory floor to become a photojournalist for American Machinist, then left there to freelance for The Economist and magazines around the world.
