Description

The Fiction of Flying reflects the poet's migrant experience in Australia. The poems explore adapting to a new identity and second language, sharing migrants' internal stories often left unspoken. They convey the longing for a dream destination that's elusive, a sense of belonging that's retrospective and present.

Unlike other books on the same subject, this book does not try to weave a typical tale of triumphant success, nor does it preach the virtues of seamless assimilation into the fabric of Australian society. There are no tales of hardship either. In other words, these poems just want to delve into the essence of lives unmarked by conventional victories or sorrows.

The poet considers migrant poems as the nuanced, often unspoken experiences of those who navigate their existence with no grand narratives to proclaim only the ephemeral journey of flight, caught between aspirations and reality.

Author Bio

Wing Yau (she/them) is a Hong Kong-born poet. Wing's work has appeared in Australia, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore and India. A Pushcart Prize nominee, Wing is currently based in Melbourne. The Fiction of Flying is their debut poetry collection.
