This innovative series grew out of a desire to provide all children with the opportunity to see themselves within the books they are reading and to identify with the children and families they see. The diversity of todays families is clearly captured. The simple text and engaging photographs explore the relationship between very young children and their environment. Hats explores a young childs world using photographs of a variety of children playing and wearing hats.
The clear, bright words and pictures of a child's close-up world in the three sturdily bound titles I've seen-My Mom, Shoes and Hats-will be happily recognized by the series' audience. The children, photographed along with mothers, hats and shoes of great and cheerful variety, are unselfconscious, and Debbie Bailey's text matches them in matter-of-fact ness: ... The "Talk-About Books" have been designed with great care for the children who will see them. Pages are easy to turn, illustrations are large and framed with primary colours, the few words are carefully chosen and clearly laid out. Highly recommended for children three and under.--Joan Skogan"Canadian Materials" (11/01/1991)
