A powerful, personal story from a popular Indigenous artist written for all Australians to better understand their history
Stories are important because they share knowledge in a variety of ways.
Our most important book is our Country. Our stories live in the land, which is why our lands are sacred.
From Gudanji/Wakaja artist Ryhia Dank comes My Story, Our Country, a vibrant and powerful picture book that explores the history and culture of First Nations people in Australia through her own family story, and looks toward a future that reckons with the past.
Ryhia Dank is a Gudanji/Wakaja woman who grew up in a remote community in the Gulf of Carpentaria. She got to know her Country though the stories her family told, and through walking in the places and footprints her family has travelled since the beginning. Her painting is storywork, and tells stories through pattern and design. Ngurruwani Gudanji-marndi maga guda gurijba iligirra gamamjani (Gudanji people are from the fresh water and hill country.)
