Bella, Jacob and Lucas are environment and climate-change savvy, so they're really excited to discover that their Nana has chosen a clean energy way to help protect the environment. Her new car is fully electric. But that's not all. Nana has solar panels on her roof! They turn sun into power and, though crazy it seems, Nana's new car drives along on sunbeams. Ka hurihia te ra hei kaha pana motoka, ahakoa rereke ki etahi, e rere ana te motoka o Kui ma runga i nga hihi o Tama-nui-te-ra. Rachel Doragh's dynamic illustrations bring the story to life in an authentic kiwi environment while Piripi Walker's literal Maori translation keeps the words simple and clear, so the rhythm is right, and each sentence flows when delivered aloud.
If youre looking for stories that model inclusiveness, helpfulness, and the blessings of family, neighbours and friends, for young children, look no further than the Nanas Shed Books bilingual collection.
The fact that these books are bilingual makes them very valuable on so many levels. I really love the extra ways of making the Mori words accessible for readers of any age. The glossaries, questions and talking points at the back are so well put together and so useful.
The charming illustrations advance each story, with little extras telling their own stories. Im particularly thinking here of the animals, and what they do. There is so much great detail to keep young readers going back and noticing new things each time they open the covers. All in all, these are a collection of delightful and important books.
