Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman present a wonderfully unexpected story stemming from a practical introduction to thirteen fantastical words, including such marvels as Bird, Dog, Panache, and Haberdashery.
Maira Kalman, renowned for her art and designillustrating the New York Times column The Principles of Uncertainty and books such as the bestselling The Elements of Stylecarries this madcap adventure to astounding heights with her vision of a world populated with hats, song, and cake. A rollicking narrative joins forces with magnificent art to create a true celebration of words.
"a winsome story of friendship--proceeds thus, with a Snicketian 13 words in all. Snicket and Kalman are perfectly matched here, both revelers in life's delicious details and things best left unexplained. This charming chef-d'oeuvre sings like a mezzo-soprano. " -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "A book that pushes boundaries and demands such active participation on the part of both readers and listeners to connect language and images (and Kalman's quirky artwork is a perfect fit, littered with fun details) is to be commended." -- ALA Booklist
Lemony Snicket is often despondent, mostly about his published research, which includes A Series of Unfortunate Events and The Composer Is Dead. Due to the world-wide web of conspiracy which surrounds him, Mr. Snicket often communicates with the general public through his representative, Daniel Handler. Mr. Handler has had a relatively uneventful life, and is the author of three books for adults, The Basic Eight, Watch Your Mouth, and Adverbs, none of which are anywhere near as dreadful as Mr. Snicket's.
