Rising above the desert plain, Uluu stands,
ancient feet planted deep within the dry red earth.
For much of the year, Uluu bakes in the kui.
But on rare days when rain-song beats,
waterfalls cascade down the rock,
creatures stir ...
and Uluu and Kata Tjua burst into life.
Rain on the Rock celebrates the impact of rain on Uluu and the Kata Tjua National Park. Told using vivid imagery, and in harmony with Aangu's connection to Country, Rain on the Rock depicts the unique beauty of one of Australias most iconic landscapes.
Jodi Toering was born in the Mallee, at Hopetoun, and grew up on a wheat farm outside a small town called Beulah. Jodi now juggles the roles of full-time teacher, mother, performer and author in Creswick, near Ballarat. Her first picture book, Mallee Sky (Walker Books), was an Honour Book in the 2020 CBCA Picture Book of the Year Awards.
Valerie Brumby was born in Alice Springs and grew up in Areyonga. As a child, she enjoyed going out with family collecting traditional foods in the bush, an activity she still enjoys when out on Country today. She now lives in Mutitjulu with her family and is one of the core artists at Walkatjara Art. As a tour guide, she also teaches about Anangu culture to the regions visitors. Valerie loves to paint the purple Parakeelya desert flowers often found in season around the three sacred sites: Uluu, Kata-Tjua and Attila (Mt. Conner).
