Description

This inspired alphabet book highlights the natural beauty of the Gulf Islands. Inviting language and compelling illustrations takes children and adults alike on an island-hopping journey through a stunning corner of the world - British Colombia, Canada. Written by area native - Bronwyn Preece - whose clear love for the Gulf Islands is evident on every page. Combined with Alex Walton's skilled watercolour illustrations, which capture the dramatic beauty of the location, this becomes far more than an educational resource: it is a work of art in its own right.

Reviews

Featured in the Calgary Herald! - Gulf Islands Alphabet by Bronwyn Preece and illustrated by Alex Walton is a gorgeous alphabet book that highlights the natural beauty of the Gulf Islands in the southwest corner of B.C., taking readers on an island-hopping journey.

Quill and Quire
The beautiful and numerous Gulf Islands, lying between the eastern coast of Vancouver Island and mainland B.C., lend themselves well to this richly illustrated alphabet book. ...Although this alphabet book celebrates a particular Canadian locale, readers anywhere will take pleasure in the colourful names and landscapes depicted in it.

""Another alphabet-type children's book is Gulf Islands Alphabet. The setting is the Salish Sea in the southwestern corner of British Columbia where the Gulf Islands are. Beautiful illustrations by Alex Walton and ""poetic alphabet"" text take the reader on a journey to the Gulf Islands' archipelago. While reading about Arbutus trees, Bowen Island, colossal cedars and Denman Island as well as Valdes Island and whale watching young readers learn about this fascinating place - and the alphabet!"" - Simcoe.com

Books My Boys Love: It's lyrical, beautifully illustrated, and the 'alphabet book' is also a Gulf Islands narrative...one that flows through each letter of the alphabet.

Author Bio

Bronwyn Preece grew up taking weekend trips to many of the Gulf Islands with her parents. Later, with friends she established a land cooperative on the off-the-grid island of Lasqueti. "Living her ethics" she pursued her passion for writing, physical theatre, and political engagement. She was elected for two consecutive three-years terms to the Islands Trust local government. Creating meaningful social dialogue through the arts has been fuelled by a life of extensive travel; becoming Canada's first accredited teacher of Action Theater, pursuing a BFA in Applied Theatre, and above all: becoming a mother. The Gulf Islands Alphabet was written while overlooking the Strait of Georgia, in a cabin run on solar and water power, that she and her partner built in anticipation of the birth of their daughter.

Alex Walton was born in Jamaica. He moved with his family to England and later immigrated to Canada before he was five. He gravitated towards art naturally as both of his parents were college art instructors. Alex studied both fine and commercial art at college level as well as graduating with a Bachelor of Natural Resource Sciences. He often brings his appreciation of nature into his paintings. He has illustrated a number of children's books. His website is www.waltonillustrations.com
