Following the success of his US debut, Bear Despair (a 2012 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book), Dormus' Coyote Run is a humorous homage to the American West that elevates recognition of the other above the blindness of violence. Inspired by Spaghetti Westerns, this Gallic one is a chase that is about matching wits and getting distracted long enough to see things in a newer and truer light. Focusing in on conflict and the easy resort to arms, Coyote Run is a timely tale that is sure to generate much discussion and debate.
It is also a chase, and a satisfying one at that, with the book's heros ultimately evading and escaping their pursuers.
"Taking inspiration from high-drama westerns set in dusty towns and parched deserts, Doremus (Bear Despair) returns with another entry in the Stories Without Words series. Like its wordless predecessors, the book's squat, horizontally oriented format emphasizes the sense of a journey. [...] Quavery pencil lines in pinks and golds emphasize the dry heat of the setting, while beguiling details...make this a memorable Wild West love story. Ages 4--8." -- Publishers Weekly "This wordless tale of a Wild West showdown has plenty of surprises. [...] Doremus's cross-hatched pencil illustrations, in dusty shades of yellow and orange, reflect the arid landscape. While this chase-and-escape story poses more questions than answers, readers will enjoy the dreamlike journey." -- School Library Journal "Silly, surreal fun: Deeper meanings, if any, are well-concealed, but who needs 'em" --Kirkus Reviews
