Kubi is a smart, inquisitive white puppy who lives with all his friends on a farm in Vietnam. But when his life suddenly changes, he sets off on a long journey that takes him far, far away from his home. This is a story based on true adventures, illustrated with beautiful watercolors, for readers to feel and share all of the emotions of this four-legged adventurer.
Kubi's modest adventure has decided charm, from the rich, gay colors of the landscape to the distinctive Vietnamese (or, more generally, Southeast Asian) touches to the sweet faces of the animals. A quietly alluring introduction to the riverside village world of Vietnam. ~ Kirkus Reviews, June 2015. Cute little dogs are always winners, and Kubi is no exception (...) The illustrations are rendered in watercolor and have a tranquil quality to them. This is a lovely book about a place many readers may know little about, made more familiar by the routines and antics of a small dog. ~ Booklist Online, September 2015.
Erik Speyer was born in Argentina, raised in Denmark, South America and the US and began painting as a child. He has continued painting throughout his life, even while flying for the U.S. Navy, designing museum exhibits, and directing a science museum. He is a full time, prize-winning artist. He wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Kubi. The inspiration for "The adventures of Kubi" came during one of his trips to Vietnam, where he learned from a friend of a little dog who often jumped onto the back of a friendly water buffalo to catch a ride or a nap.
