'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse . . .
The scene is set for a magical Christmas Eve and one of the best-loved Christmas stories of all time.
Clement C. Moore first read this timeless poem to his young children on Christmas Eve in 1822. It was published anonymously in a New York newspaper the following year and quickly spread around the world, becoming a cherished Christmas tradition for many families.
This beautiful picture book edition brings together the classic verse with enchanting illustrations by Robert Ingpen that perfectly capture the magic of Christmas for young and old alike.
Clement C. Moore (1779-1863) was one of New York's wealthiest and most educated men, and a respected academic. But he also loved to write stories and poems for his nine children, and is best known for the poem he read to them in 1822, which began with the immortal words,'Twas the Night Before Christmas...Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 in Geelong, Australia, and still lives and works nearby in Barwon Heads. In 1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children's literature and he has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia.
