She won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and was awarded a CBE for her distinguished service to childrens literature. As well as her best-loved picture books, Shirley also wrote novels for children; the first, Hero on a Bicycle won the Museum of Tolerance: Once Upon a World Childrens Book Award in 2014. Her second novel, Whistling in the Dark won the Young Quills Historical Fiction Awards in 2016.
