The novel begins with alternating chapters from two characters: Sophie, an angry Goth teenager and sarcastic social outcast; and Kenny, the 'big man on campus' whose life may be a little TOO perfect. Gradually the reader begins to see some parallels between the two teenager's lives, building up to the big reveal. Kenny, in fact, is Sophie reincarnated and living out a fantasy life! But is she really dead Sophie gradually unravels the mystery of what is happening to her, what is happening to the real Kenny, and what happened when her father mysteriously disappeared a year earlier.
There is a science fiction/fantasy element, discussion of medical research, philosophy, commerce and ethics throughout. Ultimately, this is a wildly innovative young adult novel filled with appealing, sharply-drawn characters, and crazy twists and turns."A fast, highly entertaining read, this novel will appeal to graphic-novel enthusiasts, techies, and anyone looking for a cleverly written, inventive romp in which every detail counts."--School Library Journal
"A slim Infinite Jest for teens."
--Booklist
"The language and sophisticated wit are a tasty treat even for those not fluent in geek."--BCCB
"There is a vacuum repair shop in space (think Douglas Adams), a barrage of absurdist pop-culture send-ups (think Neal Shusterman), and some yodeling (think...original emerging voice in young adult fiction)."--The Horn Book
Like Stan Smith, Sean Beaudoin spent his childhood in a small town. He later earned a B.A. in photography, which he used as a springboard into a variety of jobs: construction labourer, bus boy, used book buyer, hotel desk clerk, camp counsellor, statue repairman, dealer of jazz records on eBay and reluctant telemarketer.
