Description

An eleven year olds straight-from-the-heart account of life through the Canterbury quakes and shakes of 2010-11. Anyone would think Maddys world had crumbled when she didnt get a cell phone for her eleventh birthday. But Maddy soon has far more important things to worry about. In the dark of night, with a terrifying rumble and a deafening roar, the world turns upside down! Suddenly, words like liquefaction, aftershocks and state of emergency bubble to the surface of her vocabulary. As Maddy navigates the bumps and crashes of life after the big quakes, she discovers how strong family ties can be, and finds friendship in the most unlikely of places.

Reviews

Wallace has succeeded in portraying an individuals experience of living through the earthquakes, which at once is raw and personal, but also common to all . . . the tone is one of hope for a positive future for the city and people of Christchurch Otago Daily Times; Another in the highly admired My New Zealand Story series from Scholastic in which vividly imagined accounts 0f life make history come alive. Beatties Book Blog; I would highly recommend this book as a powerful evocation of nature and its impact on culture. The Childrens Book Council of Australia
