A wacky and wonderful adventure for 8- to 12-year-olds, about a lovable but not very bright wombat farmer, his resourceful daughter Sam and their quest to save the family farm from ruin and restore Sam's brother Billy to health.
Harlen continues the fantasy/reality dichotomy, combining the commonplace with the bizarre, that he mined so effectively with the hugely popular The Cockroach War', Brain Scamand Circus Berzerkus. Odd, amoral characters in an absurd Aussie Alice-in-Wonderland landscape take Drop Dead, Mad Dog Fredinto surreal territory, combining humour and fantasy with whimsy ' Magpies Vol 18 No 5 Nov 2003.
Jonathan Harlen was born in New Zealand but now lives in coastal New South Wales, near Byron Bay, with his wife and three young children. He runs a small farm, where he grows coffee beans and cabinet timbers. He has published many books in various genres and for various age groups. They include the much-acclaimed young adult novel, The Lion and the Lamb, Fireflies (also for young adults), and Drop Dead, Mad Dog Fred, The Cockroach War, Brain Scam and Circus Berzerkus (for younger readers).
