Hi! I'm Rainbow and I'm a koala. My mum says it's time for me to go out and find a new home to call my own. But life in the bush can be scary! It's hard to find the perfect tree. A kookaburra keeps laughing at me. It's hot and I'm thirsty and ... do I smell smoke
This inspiring series offers the perfect introduction for young readers to the wonders and perils of the natural world - and how we can all do our part to protect it.
'I love this book because it has great illustrations and all the animals are really cute. I like how the people at the Koala Hospital help Rainbow get better when she is injured in a bushfire. The story makes me sad because bushfires killed a lot of animals. But it also makes me happy because Rainbow finds a good habitat and her mum again. I give it 5 out of 5 stars! Kids who love animals will love it, and anyone who loves true stories, because it's based on things that actually happened.' Winifred, age 7, Kooki magazine
'Remy Lai's picture stories areenchanting, even as they detailserious issues about wildlife survivalin today's world. The characters in her first two booksof the series, Rainbow the Koala andStar the Elephant, are youngstersfacing a challenging world, and theyare easy to like...'Wildlife Australiamagazine
'Being in the shoes of themain character, in this case a koala which automatically has inbuilt appeal, helps [readers] be more engaged and understand the situation better, hopefullyinspiring them to become not only more aware but more active inenvironmental protection.' Barbara Braxton, The Australian Teacher Library Network
'Brisbane author-illustrator Remy Lai...has quite a following among young readers with her graphic novel-prose hybrid books...An avid animal-lover, Lai has now created a new graphic novel series, Surviving the Wild...Each book deals with climate change and the environmental issues facing different animal species, but Lai balances the perils with a certain hopefulness...There's a nice sense of nuance; Lai underscores that while humans can sometimes be "bad guys", they are also able to make change and save animal species.' Kylie Northover, The Age / The Sydney Morning Herald
