A pony inspires a child to ride high on her father's shoulders; a sailboat stirs two others to set off to sea in a cardboard box; and an airplane invites kids to soar like a bird. In 13 stunning spreads, we see how children use the world around them as the inspiration for play. Vibrant photographs are juxtaposed with lively drawings to reveal the child's own inventive interpretation. Short bursts of action-packed, rhythmic poetry encourage pre-schoolers to identify the patterning throughout the text and the sounds associated with each idea. While developing language skills, kids can join in the fun as they create their own imaginative play from what they see around them.
This book will appeal to all four- to eight-year-old stone-loving children and will speak to the hearts of their parents.--Lisa Dalrymple"Canadian Children's Book News" (09/01/2012)
(starred review) Hilb's charming colour pencil pictures are paired with bold photographs... All of the words are carefully chosen, and the sharp photographs, most of them taken specifically for the book, are without exception striking. Hilb's drawings show happy children in every attitude of play. Whether you consider Wiggle Giggle Tickle Train poetry or story, this would be an excellent book for one-to-one sharing with a toddler, promoting lots of discussion about the activities depicted and the differences between the photos and the drawings. It could also be used in a group setting because, with all of its sound effects, it is custom made for a lively library or daycare storytime. Recommended.--Ellen Heaney"Canadian Materials" (11/13/2009)
