With their hurrying and scurrying, digging, climbing, and leaping, squirrels fascinate young children. Here photographs capture squirrels working, playing, hiding, and even teasing a hawk. The story is a joy to read aloud.
Alexina B. White published a book of poems for children called Little-Folk songs in 1871, where her poem about squirrels first appeared. The poem has been anthologized under the title "Whisky Frisky" or "The Squirrel," in many cases without an author credit. Her son was the architect Stanford White. Susan Lurie is a children's book editor and author. She lives in Forest Hills, New York. Murray Head has a lifelong passion for photographing nature, art, and people. He lives in New York City.
