The first day of school can be scary, especially when no one else speaks your language. Carmen, who speaks only Spanish, knows she must be brave. Her teacher's Spanish is muy terrible; but with a little encouragement from la Senora, Carmen teaches the class Spanish words and numbers, and she in turn learns English from her new friends.
Judy Cox is an elementary school teacher who has written many picture books and chapter books for children. Publishers Weekly praised "Cox's rhythmic story" and the narrative's "cheerful, buoyant tempo" for "My Family Plays Music," winner of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Illustrator Award. She lives in Ontario, Oregon. Angela N. Dominguez was born in Mexico City and grew up in Texas. Spanish was her family's first language. Angela's older brother helped her learn English so she could be fluent by her first day of school. She lives in California.
